Ports, excursions, and practical tips

Fjords cruise ports excursions

The Norwegian Fjords offer a natural spectacle of breathtaking magnificence! As soon as your ship enters these calm waters, surrounded by dizzying cliffs and roaring waterfalls, you immediately feel the power and beauty of this unique landscape. Together, we’ll discover how to turn this port call into an unforgettable adventure.

To make reading more enjoyable and avoid large blocks of text that I dislike as much as you do, I’ve tried to use clear and synthetic tables. They will allow you to quickly find essential information, practical tips, and the highlights of each activity.

In this guide, we cover all the practical aspects of your trip: how to easily get out of the main cruise ports, which excursions to choose to maximize your time, and what to see and do to fully immerse yourself in Norwegian culture and nature.

One essential tip: shore excursions sold onboard often come with very high price tags. To pay the right price and save significantly, book your shore activities in advance! You’ll reach the same incredible places for a fraction of the cost.

Geiranger

Fjords cruise ports excursions

👁👁

Fjords cruise ports excursions

Your arrival in Geiranger is a magical moment! The ship always remains at anchor, as it cannot dock at the pier. Therefore, disembarkation is systematically done by tender boat (tender). Take advantage of this, as this short crossing already offers you a breathtaking view of the village and the surrounding waterfalls, such as the famous Seven Sisters.

Upon arrival on land, you will discover a small village that lives mainly from tourism. It is essential to plan your day, as the main activities are located at a higher elevation.

What to do in Geiranger during your cruise stop?

Point of interestℹ️ details
Mount DalsnibbaThe absolute must-see! A bus excursion takes you to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba (about 1,500 m — roughly 4,920 ft / ≈ 0.93 miles) for a breathtaking view over the Geirangerfjord. The winding road leading to the top is an impressive experience in itself.
Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen)This famous viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the fjord, the village, and the Seven Sisters waterfalls. Accessible by bus, it’s a perfect spot for unforgettable photos and to admire the entire Geiranger valley.
Kayaking and fjord safariFor adventure lovers, go kayaking or take a fast RIB boat safari. You’ll get close to the cliffs, waterfalls, and the old farms perched on the fjord slopes.
FjordcenterFor a quieter experience, walk up (about 20 minutes) to the Fjordcenter. This interactive museum tells the story of the region, its unique geology, and the daily life of fjord residents.
Money-saving tipBus excursions and transfers usually cost nearly twice as much when booked on board. To save money and secure your seat for Mount Dalsnibba or Eagle Road, book your activities online in advance.

Stavanger reveals picturesque streets and a lively maritime atmosphere. During your stopover, there’s no need to spend a cent — the port exit is completely free! The ship arrives right in the city center. I recommend getting lost in the narrow lanes of the old town, where the white wooden houses tell a charming story.

Don’t miss the chance to try a delicious local fruit juice, known as one of the best. Personally, I’m not a fan of lamb or mutton, but if those flavors appeal to you, they’re part of the local specialties — give them a try and let me know what you think!

When it comes to excursions, most cruise passengers choose to book either on board or directly at the port. Stavanger offers a variety of activities, whether you’re into history, breathtaking scenery, or culinary adventures.

Practical tips

Fjords cruise ports excursions

The Norwegian fjords are a unique environment that requires a bit of preparation. Here are our top tips to make every stopover stress-free and smooth, so you can fully enjoy your experience.

Logistics – disembarkation and transport

Key pointℹ️ Details
TenderIn small fjords like Geiranger or Olden, ships anchor offshore. Disembarkation is always by tender. Expect a 30–60 minute wait, especially if you haven’t booked an excursion with the cruise company.
Essential planningVillages such as Flåm or Geiranger rely heavily on tourism, and buses to attractions (Mount Dalsnibba, Flåm train) fill up fast. Book your transfers and tickets online in advance to guarantee your spot and save time.
AccessibilityDocks are often very close to the city center in Bergen, Ålesund, or Stavanger, making it easy to explore on foot.

Currency and budget

Key pointℹ️ Details
Norwegian krone (NOK)This is the official currency, but Norway is almost cashless.
Credit/debit cardsYour card is accepted everywhere, even for a bottle of water or a bus ticket. Cash is not necessary.
Excursion budgetOnboard excursions can cost 2–3 times more than booking online directly. For popular activities (Flåm train, Dalsnibba), online booking optimizes your budget. Fjord costs = 1 arm… maybe 2 😂😂

Weather and gear

Key pointℹ️ Details
Changeable weatherWeather in the fjords changes quickly. Bright sunshine can turn into light rain in minutes.
Layered clothingUse the onion method: waterproof windbreaker, fleece or warm sweater, t-shirts. Easier to remove a layer than add one you forgot.
Walking shoesStreets may be cobbled or slippery, and excursions often involve walking (Mount Fjellstua in Ålesund, strolls in Flåm). Comfortable, grippy shoes are essential.

By following these practical tips and preparing properly, your Norwegian fjord stopovers will be smooth and rewarding. Enjoy every moment discovering spectacular landscapes and local culture.
