Tunis Goulette cruise port excursions
During your cruise stopover in La Goulette, you are 10 km from the medina of Tunis, the souk (gate of France). And guess what? A little surprise awaits you at the port, at the main entrance: the Harbor village. This charming village offers a beautiful overview of Tunis with its shops, restaurants and entertainment, all accompanied by smiling and warm Tunisians!
How to get from the port of la Goulette in Tunis to the city center
Tunis Goulette cruise port excursions

To get from the La Goulette cruise port to the city center, the medina, and the souks, there are a few options—but for this specific stop, we highly recommend using the shuttle only…
How to get to downtown Tunis from the cruise port?
By train:
- Exit the terminal and walk about 20 minutes to the TGM station on your right. This is the most affordable way to reach downtown Tunis (around 20 minutes to the “Tunis” stop).
- ⚠️ Watch out for pickpockets: keep your bag in front of you and stay alert. I’m not trying to be mean, but the port of La Goulette is… special. So if you don’t feel like getting hassled every 15 seconds, the shuttle is definitely your best option!
By taxi:
- Avoid the taxis waiting directly outside the terminal—overpriced fares, pushy behavior, even aggressive at times… and you might get an unpleasant surprise on the way back.
🚌 By Civitatis shuttle (via MonTataneTour):
This is the easiest and most reliable option—same pickup point, same route, same schedule as the cruise line shuttle… but for a much better price!
💰 Price comparison:
- Cruise line shuttle (if booked on board): $82/person – $61 per child
- Shuttle via MonTataneTour (Civitatis): Only $33 !
Conclusion?
No need to say more… Why pay more for the exact same service?

What to do in la Goulette, Tunis, during your cruise stopover?
Medina and the souks of Tunis

The Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a true labyrinth of narrow, cobbled alleyways, where every corner offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history. Wander through this maze of streets and let yourself be carried away by its unique atmosphere. You’ll discover a variety of traditional crafts: carpets, spices, jewelry, and typical clothing… In short, it’s the perfect place for delightful discoveries.
Must see attractions
- The Souks of the Medina: The traditional markets of Tunis, known as souks, are one of the highlights of the Medina. Here, you’ll find local products, high-quality handicrafts, and unique souvenirs. The carpet, fabric, and spice souks are particularly famous. It’s an authentic immersion into Tunisian craftsmanship.
- The Gate of France: This historic gate is a must-visit to understand the city’s history. It perfectly blends Tunisian and European architectural influences, serving as a testament to Tunis’s past.
- Historic Squares of Tunis: Tunis is full of historic squares, such as Place de la Kasbah, a lively spot where ancient architecture meets the local atmosphere. It’s a perfect place to pause, relax, and admire the city’s beauty.
A practical tip: bargaining is part of the experience!
When shopping in the souks, it’s completely normal to see prices slightly inflated. Don’t worry—it’s a tradition in Tunisia. Bargaining is part of the experience and can even be quite fun. Feel free to negotiate, as prices are never set in stone, and it can turn into a lively game. It’s a friendly, enjoyable practice that is an integral part of Tunisian culture.
Sidi Bou Saïd

What to do during a cruise stop in Tunis? Discover Sidi Bou Saïd and its unique charm
Sidi Bou Saïd is a charming little village that you simply cannot miss during your stop in Tunis. Famous for its white and blue houses, quiet alleys, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, this place will offer you a timeless experience. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into Greece, with a peaceful atmosphere and an idyllic setting.
A village with a Mediterranean feel
Sidi Bou Saïd is a true haven of peace. You’ll get lost in its narrow streets, lined with white and blue houses typical of the region. The view of the Mediterranean Sea, with its azure waters and stunning horizon, will leave you speechless. It’s the perfect place to relax, take memorable photos, and soak in the village’s unique ambiance.
Café des Délices – A must visit stop
During your visit, don’t miss the chance to take a break at the famous Café des Délices. This café offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the city and is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee or tea while admiring the scenery. Just a heads-up—you might be a bit disappointed if you’re hoping to run into Patrick Bruel (french singer)😉! While this café gained fame as a filming location for the music video of the song “Café des Délices,” it is mostly beloved for its spectacular view.
A small “but” to consider
However, there is one “but” to keep in mind: Sidi Bou Saïd is a very steep village! If you use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking, be aware that the cobbled streets and rather steep slopes may make the visit a bit more challenging. It’s not impossible, but it can be tiring. If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with the beauty of the surroundings and the incredible views that await you. Be sure to take a few breaks to enjoy the scenery without overexerting yourself.

It is a truly impressive archaeological site where history comes to life beneath your feet. If you’re a fan of culture and history, this is a must-see location during your stop in Tunis.
The ancient ruins of Carthage

Among the highlights not to miss is the Roman Theater, a spectacular site where you can imagine the plays performed over 2,000 years ago. Don’t miss the Antonine Baths, which testify to the grandeur of Carthage at its peak. This impressive site allows you to immerse yourself in the history of this ancient civilization, wandering among the remains of temples, villas, and other monuments.
The Carthage Mosque

In addition to the ancient ruins, Carthage is home to the Carthage Mosque, a beautiful example of Islamic architecture. This peaceful and spiritual place is the perfect spot to relax and learn more about the region’s religious and cultural history. The mosque is situated on a hill, offering a breathtaking view of the ancient ruins and the Mediterranean Sea.

If you want to extend your exploration of Carthage, don’t miss the Saint Louis Cathedral, a magnificent building that bears witness to the Christian influence during the colonial era. Around the cathedral, you’ll find several artisan shops where you can purchase ceramics, jewelry, and typical items. It’s a great opportunity to bring home a unique souvenir from your visit.
A little tip
If you really want to explore Carthage in depth, be aware that the site is vast and deserves more than just a few hours. Plan enough time to visit the various ruins, walk between the remains, and appreciate the beauty of the place. You won’t be disappointed by the unique atmosphere and the historical richness of the site!
The Marsa district
Tunis Goulette cruise port excursions
The Marsa is one of the most chic and upscale districts in Tunis, located about 15 km north of the city center and just a few minutes from the La Goulette port. This area is a true haven of peace, favored by locals, expatriates, and visitors alike who seek a tranquil spot with breathtaking views. A perfect blend of seaside resort, luxury, and history.
An elegant and sophisticated neighborhood
The Marsa is often compared to Beverly Hills in Tunis, due to its sophisticated atmosphere and affluent residents. Here, you’ll discover elegant villas, refined cafés, and high-end boutiques where quality products can be found. This district offers a serene atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing stroll, a leisurely lunch, or even a shopping session.
The beach and trendy spots

If you’re looking for a place to unwind, The Marsa will not disappoint you. This district is famous for its pleasant beaches, including the renowned Marsa Beach, perfect for a well-deserved break under the sun. The seafront cafés, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean, are the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or a light meal while soaking in the scenery. The atmosphere, both calm and chic, makes this spot a popular place to spend a peaceful afternoon, serenely contemplating the sea.
President Ben Ali Palace
Tunis Goulette cruise port excursions – La Marsa
Still in the Carthage region, in The Marsa, stands the impressive President Ben Ali Palace, a place that will instantly transport you to another world. Located near the sea, the setting is breathtaking, and the palace’s architecture is simply stunning. This site is a must-see, even though access is restricted.
Although the palace is not open for interior visits, the exterior is well worth the detour. The architecture of this presidential palace is of rare grandeur, blending traditional and modern elements in perfect harmony. You’ll be able to admire the elegant facades, well-maintained gardens, and the splendid view of the Mediterranean Sea that surrounds the place. Even from a distance, the majesty of the building will give you the impression of being in a movie set.
Practical advice for a successful stopover in Tunis
Tunis Goulette cruise port excursions

Planning a stopover in Tunis can be a rewarding experience, especially with a few practical tips to fully enjoy the city. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your stopover in La Goulette, the port of Tunis.
- Dress for the climate
Tunis enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. For a pleasant stopover, opt for light and comfortable clothing, especially if you are visiting during the summer season. Don’t forget to take your sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. If you are visiting in winter, bring a light sweater, as temperatures can drop in the evenings.
- Secure your personal belongings
As in any big city, it is important to stay vigilant. Keep your belongings safe, especially in popular tourist areas like the medina, the souk, or near major attractions. Use a backpack with a secure closure or a discreet pouch for your valuables.
- Safe and Avoid Areas
Tourist areas such as the medina, the souk, Sidi Bou Said, and Carthage are safe for visitors. However, as in any large city, be careful in busier areas, and use official transport for your travels.
Cruise friends. Remember your passport and documents
Before going ashore at La Goulette, make sure you have your passport with you, as it is required for entry formalities into Tunisia. When you disembark, there is a quick security check at the port. You will pass in front of the police, where they will stamp your documents. This only takes a few minutes.
Attention . The evening before, in your cabin, you will receive two documents to fill out. Make sure to take them with you when you leave the port of La Goulette. These documents will be checked upon your return to the ship.
→ Just at the foot of the boat, you can take a picture with camels and also you will see Tunisians playing traditional music! The pictures with the falcons are also adorable, this animal is really majestic in my eyes. You can give a few dinars or even 1 euro, it allows them to live with dignity.
Important:
The Tunisian people are truly lovely. But like anywhere, some situations can be tricky. And at the La Goulette port, that’s often the case.
The taxis waiting on your left as you exit the terminal are aggressive, pushy, and even oppressive. I mentioned this earlier, and it’s not just our experience, this is the feedback from hundreds of cruisers.
A bit further down, the ones not directly in front of the port try a different approach. They act super friendly at first, offering you a full day tour for 50 or 60 euros with the classic “no problem, we’ll take you everywhere.” But when you return to the port… it’s a whole different story. Their attitude changes, they give you a totally different price, make excuses like “it’s to feed my children,” complain your tip is too small, sulk, or flat-out make you feel uncomfortable.
In short, a real fiasco. And we absolutely don’t like that. So don’t let them intimidate you if you choose to take a taxi : or better yet, just take the bus as we recommended!
