Civitavecchia Rome transfer cruise
Getting out of Civitavecchia port

You’ll soon arrive at the port of Civitavecchia, but heads up — Rome is about 70 km away! No worries. If you follow my tips, you’ll not only navigate easily but also save a good amount of money.
What are the options to get from Civitavecchia to Rome?
Option | Round Trip Price | Duration | Advantages |
---|---|---|---|
🚆 Train (20-minute walk from port) | From €9.20 | 1h04 – 1h09 | Very affordable – great if you like walking – authentic local vibe |
🚌 Private shuttle | €25 | 1 hour | Direct departure from port – No walking – Affordable and comfortable |
🚢 Cruise company excursion | €99 per person | Variable | 4 times more expensive than other options |
MSC – COSTA Cruises: A good deal? Absolutely not!
❌ The mistake 80% of cruisers make: waiting until you’re on board or already off the ship to arrange your transfer and day in Rome. Result? Limited options, outrageous prices from cruise lines, or worse… improvising and losing valuable time.
→ Private taxi: expect to pay between €240 and €350 round trip for about 1 hour and 20 minutes of travel. Comfortable, but very expensive.

Rome shore excursions – Don’t overpay 4x More!
Honestly, taking the train is a great choice if you enjoy walking and traveling on a budget. I highly recommend it for a true local experience. But if you’d rather save time and travel more comfortably, don’t fall into the usual trap: stop playing the cruise lines’ overpriced game.
I speak this openly because I meet cruisers every month, and I see the disappointment on your faces after paying so much for services that cost just a fraction elsewhere. My mission is to help you avoid that frustration and enjoy your day to the fullest.

Excursion with MSC, Costa, or Royal Caribbean | ~€99 | None |

Who Am I, and Why MonTataneTour?
Important Note: Dear “Tataners,” behind this in-depth guide to Civitavecchia (and all your cruise stops) is 7 years of passion, real-life experience, and the hard work of one woman—not just some algorithm or disconnected travel bot 😎
I’m Sarah—or as many cruisers now call me, Miss Tatane (yes, I’m always wearing my trusty flip-flops!). I created MonTataneTour out of pure frustration… and a deep love of sharing helpful info! After years of seeing fellow cruisers confused, stressed out, or stuck with overpriced transportation options from cruise lines, I knew it was time to step in and offer a better way.
My mission is simple: to give you the keys to a smooth, authentic, and budget-friendly port day—far from tourist traps and cruise company markups. And just to be 100% transparent: yes, I may earn a tiny affiliate commission from links, but that’s not what drives me. I don’t pay myself from this site. What really fuels me is knowing I’ve helped you make the most of your cruise stop—without overspending.
