As the ship enters Valletta’s harbor, the view is simply stunning golden fortifications, historic buildings, and that incredible Mediterranean light over the sea. The arrival itself is worth the trip!
Here’s the best part: you arrive directly in the city! No need for a shuttle, bus, or taxi. In just a 20-minute walk (about 1 mile / 1.6 km), you’ll reach Valletta’s historic center. The walk is beautiful all the way perfect for your first stopover photos.
Ladies if you love shopping, you’ll be in heaven! There are plenty of local boutiques, charming streets, and authentic products to bring home. Gentlemen — from quad rides to snorkeling in turquoise waters, you’re going to love it too!
And of course, don’t miss St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Upper Barrakka Gardens for breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour, and the Three Cities just across the water easily reached by ferry. A perfect mix of history, beauty, and good vibes!
The Barrakka Lift

As soon as you disembark at the port (about 1.6 km away), you’ll notice an impressive elevator rising along the fortifications this is the Barrakka Lift. It’s your best shortcut to start your stopover without wasting time or energy!
This metallic giant connects the waterfront level directly to the famous Upper Barrakka Gardens in just a few seconds. No more steep uphill walks under the sun! It’s a super convenient and well-integrated way to reach the city.
Besides being functional, the lift offers a unique perspective over the port and the Three Cities during its short ride. It’s already a mini-attraction in itself and the perfect place to snap your first panoramic photos of the Grand Harbour before even reaching the gardens!

Take your time strolling through, admire the classic architecture, or enjoy a bit of shopping if you’re into that. Gentlemen, you won’t be left out between the cafés, squares, and narrow side streets, you’ll find plenty of perfect spots to experience the city’s charm and history.

Vittoriosa, Senglea & Cospicua
You can see them from the Barrakka Gardens, just across from Valletta: the Three Cities, Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua are the historical cradle of the Order of St. John, long before Valletta was built. Visiting them is like stepping back in time to discover Malta before its modern capital existed.
Getting there is quick and easy: take the ferry or a traditional Maltese water taxi (Dgħajsa) from the Grand Harbour. The short ride offers stunning views of the fortifications. Once there, stroll through the narrow streets of Vittoriosa (Birgu), visit Fort St. Angelo, and enjoy the views from Gardjola Gardens in Senglea (Isla). It’s calmer but just as charming as Valletta.

Known as the “Silent City,” its peaceful atmosphere contrasts beautifully with the liveliness of Valletta.
Once you pass through the main gate, you’ll be amazed by the narrow alleys, golden limestone facades, old lanterns, and flower-filled balconies. Highlights include the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral, its museum, and the city walls offering breathtaking panoramic views across the island. If you ask me what my top excursion in Malta is, I’ll answer without hesitation: the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island! Sure, I love wandering around Valletta or the peaceful streets of Mdina, but the Blue Lagoon is pure bliss: crystal-clear water, small coves, snorkeling, swimming, and breathtaking scenery.
To make the day even better, I recommend combining it with a visit to Gozo. This island is quieter than Malta, with lush landscapes, cliffs, picturesque villages, and the Victoria Citadel. It’s perfect for strolling, taking photos, and enjoying the authentic side of the Maltese archipelago.
The Blue Lagoon remains my favorite moment of the stopover, whether it’s for a quick swim, a boat excursion, or just admiring the incredible water color. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t forget!

Ggantija Temples

If you love real history, the kind that amazes, the Ġgantija Temples are a must-see. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are among the oldest monumental structures in the world. Yes, you read that right they predate the Egyptian pyramids.
Their name, Ġgantija (Tower of Giants), comes from the massive limestone blocks used in construction. Back then, people literally thought giants built these temples and seeing their size, you’ll understand why. The visit offers a fascinating dive into prehistoric mysteries, without unnecessary delays.
Plan your excursion carefully
The temples are on Gozo Island, just like the Blue Lagoon. This means you need some time and a bit of organization!
- Allow at least an 8-hour stopover if you’re on a cruise; if your stop is only 6 hours, don’t stress trying to fit everything in!
- The trip includes the ferry from Malta to Gozo, local transfers, and of course the site visit.
My advice: don’t attempt this alone unless you’re very well organized. The easiest way is to book a combined Gozo + Ġgantija excursion offered by cruise companies or local agencies. Everything is handled, and you can enjoy the experience stress-free.

If you’re looking for an authentic touch during your stopover, don’t miss Marsaxlokk. This colorful fishing village in southern Malta is famous for its traditional luzzu boats and Sunday market, where you can find fresh fish, local products, and handmade crafts.
Strolling along the harbor, admiring the boats, and stopping at small cafés or waterfront restaurants is a true pleasure. The atmosphere is friendly and typically Maltese, perfect for relaxing after historical visits to Valletta or Mdina.
You can easily reach Marsaxlokk by car, taxi, or bus from Valletta. Even if you’re short on time, the village is worth the visit, especially if you want to experience the island’s authentic and lively side.
