If you’re lucky enough to stop in Catania, Sicily, located between Messina and Syracuse, your cruise ship will dock right in the city center. You’ll just have a 3-minute walk to reach Cathedral Square, and voilà—the city is yours to explore, completely free!

This Sicilian gem really has something unique. Its cobblestone streets, Baroque buildings, and lively markets create an authentic atmosphere where past and present meet. How to exit the cruise port in Ancona

Ancona, a stopover to avoid?

Ancona is a city located on the Adriatic coast in northeastern Italy. It is the main port of the Marche region and is an important commercial and industrial center.

The port of Ancona is located approximately 300 km from Rome. Exiting the port is free and it is possible to reach the city center on foot or by bus.

→ By bus . Buses depart from the port every 15 minutes and reach the city center in around 10 minutes. The ticket costs €1.50.

→ On foot . The city center can be reached on foot in about 30 minutes. The walk is pleasant, as it runs along the port and offers beautiful views of the sea.

If you wish, here are a couple of things to do in Ancona:

  • Visit the Saint-Cyriaque Cathedral, a Roman-Byzantine style religious building from the 12th century which is one of the most important in the region.
  • Stroll through the historic center, which is a maze of narrow streets and picturesque squares.
  • Visit the National Archaeological Museum of Marche

How to Get Out of the Cruise Port in Palma de Mallorca

When you stop in Palma de Mallorca, your cruise line may offer round-trip tickets for €13 ($14) and drop you off at Plaza de Reina, near the cathedral. However, I don’t recommend this option.

My Advice:

Exit the port on foot — it’s only a 2-minute walk from the ship to catch a bus or taxi. Personally, and many others agree, the €13 ticket isn’t worth it.

You can take a taxi at the port exit. For example, a ride from the Palma port to the cathedral costs about €10 ($11).

If you’re traveling with family, you’ll see that the taxi is much more convenient.

For couples, you can share the fare with another couple — it’s cheaper and very popular.

At the port exit, you’ll also find buses No. 1 or 20 that will take you to the city center and various tourist spots in Palma.

How to Get Out of the Cruise Port in Gibraltar

When you reach the wonderful Gibraltar, good news: disembarking is free! Once you step off the ship, you’ll find yourself at the foot of the impressive Rock — a breathtaking experience in itself.

The port is nearby, just a 10-15 minute walk, and you’re already in the heart of the city. On the famous Main Street, you’ll find a paradise of shops, restaurants, and souvenir stores. It’s a charming spot I highly recommend visiting.

Be sure to explore the stunning St. Michael’s Cave, a true wonder worth visiting, along with the Nature Reserve. I don’t recommend attempting to hike there on foot, as the path is steep and time-consuming. Instead, take the cable car for a quick and comfortable way to reach these must-see sites.

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are also exceptionally beautiful — a real green oasis not to be missed.

What to Do in Gibraltar During a Cruise Stop

  • Gibraltar Rock and Mount Gibraltar. Climb the famous Rock of Gibraltar for spectacular views of the Mediterranean, Spain, and Morocco. You can also visit St. Michael’s Cave and see the Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe.
  • Gibraltar City Center. Explore Gibraltar’s lively city center, where you’ll find duty-free shops, restaurants, cafes, and historical sites like the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned and Casemates Square.
  • Seafront Promenade. Enjoy a pleasant walk along Gibraltar’s seafront promenade, offering stunning views of the port, cruise ships, and the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • World War II Tunnels. Visit the underground tunnels built during World War II to learn more about Gibraltar’s military history. Some tunnels are open to the public and feature war exhibitions.
  • Guided Bus Tour. Explore Gibraltar’s highlights and admire the view of Africa from Europa Point Lighthouse on this air-conditioned tour. Meet the monkeys in the nature park and visit St. Michael’s Cave. Duration approx. 2h ($42).
  • Beaches. Relax at one of Gibraltar’s beaches, such as Sandy Bay or Catalan Bay, where you can swim, sunbathe, and enjoy water sports.
  • Duty-Free Shopping. Take advantage of Gibraltar’s duty-free shopping.

How to Get Out of the Cruise Port in Athens

Upon arriving at the “Piraeus” port in Athens, you have several options to reach the city center, including the Acropolis, all at affordable rates.

The first option is to take a taxi, which can drop you off directly at a metro station or even at the Acropolis. Taxis in Athens are known to be inexpensive, and drivers are generally honest. For example, we took a taxi from Monastiraki to the Acropolis and paid only 13 euros for 4 people.

Another possibility is to take the metro. From the port, you’ll need to walk about 2 km to reach the nearest metro station. Once on board, take line 1 and get off at Monastiraki. From there, you can take bus No. 035 directly to the Acropolis. Expect about a 10-minute walk from the Akropole bus stop.

If you prefer the bus, line 040 will take you to Syntagma Square, the heart of Athens. It’s about a 2 km walk from the port. The ticket costs only 1 euro.

How to Get Out of the Cruise Port in Mykonos

Dear cruisers, when you arrive in Mykonos, get ready to be amazed! This is one of my favorite destinations, and you’ll definitely experience a change of scenery. To leave the port, there’s one TOP option: the ship’s tender, since the ship stays offshore and doesn’t dock at Mykonos port. It only takes 4 minutes by tender. You got it—free exit, and get ready for your heart to be filled with excitement.

Once you’re out of the port, the magic happens. Just a 2-minute walk along the quay will immerse you in the enchanting atmosphere of Mykonos. The streets are simply gorgeous, and beware—you might fall in love with this island forever. Follow your heart and enjoy an unforgettable experience in Mykonos. Make the most of every moment and explore all the treasures this incredible island has to offer.

One important point: traveling to another country requires basic manners. The Greeks are extremely welcoming and polite, and this is something I teach my children. Even if you don’t speak the language, always say hello, goodbye, and thank you. If you’re unsure, here’s a little phonetic help:

Hello (morning) = Kaliméra | (afternoon) = Kalispera | Goodbye = Adio | Thank you = Efcharisto (pronounced F-aristo)

How to Get Out of the Cruise Port in Santorini

Dear readers, let me share a well-kept secret. Arriving in Santorini is already a free excursion worth seeing. Cruise ships find a privileged spot nestled between the island of Santorini itself and the island of Nea Kameni. Trust me, the arrival is simply spectacular!
When you arrive in Santorini, you will be taken by tender to the parking area—an experience that is truly amazing.

If you want to explore the lower part of Santorini, you’ll find some shops and restaurants. But for everyone, the absolute must-see is Fira, the town located on the cliff above. I highly recommend taking the cable car, as I’m against animal mistreatment. Even if it’s a local tradition, I prefer to leave the donkeys alone.

The cable car costs €6 per trip for adults and €3 for children. For the more athletic, you can climb the stairs with around 550 steps (about 45 minutes). Alternatively, you can go up with the cable car and descend via the stairs. If you want to visit Oia with its iconic houses, shops, and restaurants, it’s about 10–15 minutes from Fira (down below).

  • Buy a ticket through the cruise company (personally, I don’t recommend it).
  • Take a taxi (also optional), but be careful not to get charged excessively. A fare of €7–10 is reasonable.
  • Use the local bus for just €1, easy to spot as it’s right outside the port. The 4 km ride takes about 7 minutes.
