How to get from Miami airport to cruise port

When you arrive at Miami International Airport to begin your cruise, it is crucial to choose a transfer that meets your needs in terms of comfort, speed and budget. Here are two paid transfer options that will allow you to reach the port of Miami with complete peace of mind. We took the transfer because there were 4 of us (we shared the cost) and it is easier because I find the bus really difficult.

Miami airport transfers (MIA)
Miami International Airport (MIA) is located just 5 miles (8 km) from Downtown and about 11 miles (18 km) from Miami Beach. To reach your destination, you’ll find several convenient transfer options.
The cheapest optionc- Public transportation (bus, Metrorail & trolley)
Surprisingly, you can take public transportation directly from Miami Airport. The bus station, however, is not located inside the airport itself.
- Starting point – To catch a bus, you first need to go to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), a major transport hub located 1 mile (1.6 km) from the airport.
- How to get there? Simply follow the signs to the MIA Mover, a free automated train that takes you there in just 4 minutes, operating 24/7. Super easy even with luggage.
- Bus lines – From the MIC, you’ll have access to several Metrobus routes. The most useful for visitors is the Metrobus 150 (Miami Beach Airport Express), which goes straight to Miami Beach. A one-way ticket costs $2.25.
- Free trolley – Miami’s free trolley system also stops at the MIC. The Flagami line runs Monday through Saturday and connects you to the surrounding neighborhood.
- Payment – The easiest way is to use the GO Miami-Dade Transit app or purchase an Easy Card in advance.
The easiest option: Taxi or ride-sharing (Uber & Lyft)
For a direct and hassle-free transfer, taxis or ride-sharing services remain the most convenient choice.
- Fares – Expect to pay around $30–$35 for a taxi to South Beach, while Uber or Lyft usually cost between $20–$30. Personally, I always go with Uber.
- Travel time – About 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

South beach & Ocean drive
Miami cruise port excursions – The vibrant soul of the city

South Beach is without a doubt Miami’s most iconic neighborhood. With its white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and pastel-colored Art Deco buildings, it’s the perfect spot to feel the city’s vibrant energy. Ocean Drive, the legendary street running along the beach, is lined with palm trees, sidewalk cafés, and historic hotels. Day and night, South Beach is always alive — from joggers and wide-eyed tourists to photo shoots and cocktail lovers.
It’s also a great place to stroll, rent a bike, or simply sit facing the ocean and soak up the tropical vibes. The beaches are clean, safe, and family-friendly, making them perfect whether you’re traveling as a couple or with kids. At night, the district lights up: neon signs and glowing Art Deco buildings create a retro, glamorous atmosphere. It’s one of the best places in Miami to enjoy a drink or a meal with an ocean view. South Beach is both a postcard setting and the beating heart of Miami life.
Little Havana

Little Havana is Miami’s cultural heart, where you instantly dive into Cuban heritage. Walking along Calle Ocho, the main avenue, you’ll be greeted by salsa rhythms, the aroma of Cuban coffee, and the warm atmosphere of the neighborhood. Locals play dominoes in the parks, street conversations flow naturally, and colorful murals tell the stories of Cuban immigrants.
It’s the perfect spot for an authentic stroll, away from the classic tourist routes. Expect local craft shops, mojito bars, and restaurants serving traditional dishes like empanadas or ropa vieja. Cigars are part of the culture here, and many small shops let you watch artisans rolling them by hand.
More than just a neighborhood, Little Havana is a cultural journey. You’ll discover the history of a proud community that recreated a piece of Cuba in Florida. Street concerts, live festivals, and evening walks make the experience even more memorable. For cruise passengers, visiting in the late afternoon or early evening is ideal — when the streets come alive with music and energy.

Practical tips for a successful Miami cruise stop
Preparing for a Miami cruise stop can seem challenging, but with the right tips, you can make the most of your time and fully enjoy the city. Here are some practical tips for a stress-free and memorable visit.
- Dress for the climate: Miami has a tropical climate with high temperatures and humidity. Wear light, comfortable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. If visiting during the rainy season (June–November), bring a small umbrella or a light raincoat.
- Consider the time difference: If arriving from another time zone, allow some rest before starting sightseeing to avoid fatigue and enjoy your stop fully.
- Secure your belongings: Stay vigilant in crowded areas like South Beach and tourist hotspots. Use a backpack or a crossbody bag with a secure zipper.
- Plan your itinerary in advance: Prioritize must-see attractions and consider travel time between locations. Hop-on hop-off buses are a convenient option to see multiple sites efficiently.
With these tips, you’ll be ready to enjoy your Miami cruise stop to the fullest. Good planning is key to a stress-free and memorable experience.
Safety in Miami during a cruise stop
Miami is a vibrant and lively city, but like any major metropolis, it comes with some safety considerations. Whether you’re visiting solo, as a couple, or with family, here are practical tips to enjoy your stopover safely.
→ Know the safe areas and areas to avoid
Most tourist areas in Miami are generally safe, including South Beach, Downtown, Wynwood, and Little Havana. However, some neighborhoods can be risky, especially after dark. We haven’t listed every neighborhood—some should simply be avoided for your safety.
- Safe neighborhoods for tourists: South Beach, Brickell, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne.
- Neighborhoods to avoid at night: Parts of Overtown, Liberty City, and Allapattah.
→ Getting around safely
When moving around Miami, always use secure and official transportation options:
- Official taxis or rideshares (Uber/Lyft): Always use authorized taxis or rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. Avoid hailing taxis on the street.
- Public transportation: Buses and metro are generally safe during the day. At night, opt for a taxi or Uber, especially if traveling alone.
Tip: Always check that the license plate matches the one shown in the Uber or Lyft app before getting in.
Following these tips will help you enjoy your Miami cruise stop safely and stress-free.
