How to exit the cruise port in Livorno

During your stopover in Livorno, you are probably wondering how to leave the cruise port safely. When you arrive, cruise lines usually offer tickets in your cabin to reach Piazza del Municipio by bus, just 3 minutes from the port, for a price of 7.99 euros (but personally, I find these exaggerated prices, so I prefer to walk there in just 5 minutes).

As soon as you disembark from the boat, you will find hostesses at the exit of the terminal who will provide you with pink tickets, free to leave the port (because it is large and difficult to walk on foot). These tickets, offered by the port of Livorno , are also delivered by agents of MSC, Costa and other companies. Board this free shuttle, which will take you out of the port in just 3 minutes. Then, a short 5-minute walk will take you to Piazza del Municipio, which is in the immediate vicinity.

Proximity to Livorno . Livorno is the perfect starting point for a day trip to Pisa. The city is easily accessible, offering a quick transition to a crazy adventure.

  • Leaning Tower of Pisa. The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most famous monuments in the world. It attracts visitors from all walks of life, fascinated by its unique tilt and fascinating history.
  • Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). Located around the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to the magnificent Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery.

Why visit Pisa from Livorno?

  • Iconic monuments. In addition to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Piazza dei Miracoli offers several other exceptional historical and architectural sites.
  • Culture and History. Pisa is rich in history and culture, offering a deep immersion into Italian heritage.

Activities and extras

  • Climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For a breathtaking view of the city, climb the 294 steps of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (it’s worth it, but it’s worth it) 😀. The experience is unique, but it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance to avoid long lines.
  • Visit the Cathedral and Baptistery. Don’t miss exploring the Pisa Cathedral with its impressive Romanesque architecture and the Baptistery with its exceptional acoustics.
  • Tasting local specialties. Take advantage of your visit to taste local specialties such as cecina (chickpea pancake, the best in the world) and delicious Italian pastries in the surrounding cafes.

How to get to Pisa?

→ By train

This is the most economical option. From Livorno Centrale station, direct trains to Pisa Centrale run approximately every 30 minutes. The journey takes 17 minutes and costs 5.60 euros return per person. The train station is 3 km from the cruise port. You can go there on foot (20 mins), by bus (10 mins) or by taxi in 7 mins (8/10 euros per trip).

→ By private bus – Transfer to the Tower of Pisa A/R

A round-trip transfer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa by private bus is available for 19 euros. This option is 7 times cheaper than the excursion sold on cruise ships. Reserve your place in advance, but first, take the free bus (with the pink ticket) to Piazza del Municipio (5 minutes walk). The private bus will wait for you in the square with an agent recognizable by his green sweater and red sign.

Visit Livorno

At the exit of the port of Livorno you will find taxis available. However, be careful if you want to visit the city. Some drivers may try to offer you exorbitant prices, up to three times higher than normal. Don’t give in and always negotiate!

Another interesting option if you  only want to visit Livorno  is to opt for  tourist buses . Opt for the tourist bus to Livorno. You can hop off and hop back on at each stop, giving you the flexibility to see all the must-see sites and move between locations as you prefer. What to do in Livorno outside of Pisa?

  • Take a stroll through the Venezia Nuova District . A neighborhood with picturesque canals and Renaissance architecture, built by the Medici in the 16th century. I grant you it’s not Venice but it’s very nice all the same.
  • Visit the Fortezza Nuova . An imposing 16th century fortress which offers breathtaking views of the city and the sea.
  • Discover the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum , dedicated to the work of this 19th century Italian realist painter from Livorno.
  • Enjoy the beaches of Livorno , such as Spiaggia di Cala Marzocco or Spiaggia del Viticcio (my favorite).
  • Take a boat trip to the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, such as Capraia or Elba.
  • Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Mercato delle Vettovaglie . A covered market where you’ll find everything from fresh produce to souvenirs. It’s not Barcelona’s boqueria mercado, but it’s worth a visit.
